"Ohana Kuleana":
Community Responsibility
The Ohana Kuleana Community Garden envisions healthy, abundant living through promoting organic growing to enhance a supportive community and sustainability for everyone.
Garden Description
Opened in 2013, the Ohana Kuleana Community Garden (OKCG) is located on the north side of Durango at 564 E 30th Street, right below Riverview Elementary. Ohana Kuleana are Hawaiian terms that mean Community Responsibility: we all own each other’s actions.
Bob Lieb, whose vision and financial support made the garden possible, chose the name Ohana Kuleana. He feels the term describes the sense of communal responsibility and stewardship necessary to operate a successful community garden. The garden is on a half-acre plot with approximately 12,000 square feet (sf) of growing space: 5,000 sf berm surrounding the garden and 7,000 sf of plots. Included are 45 plots, six dedicated to pupils at nearby Riverview School and the rest leased to community members for the season (May-October).
Our Story

The Ohana Kuleana Community Garden opened its first season in 2013. Ohana Kuleana offers both community members and pupils from adjacent Riverview School opportunities to connect with nature, grow their own organic food, and reap the bounty of a perennial food forest from a berm bursting with fruit-bearing trees and shrubs.

Garden Design
The design for the Ohana Kuleana Community Garden (OKCG) is based on the requirement for the space to serve multiple purposes, the unique features of the site, and the need to address various social and safety concerns of those living in the neighborhood. Ohana Kuleana is a Hawaiian term that means “community responsibility." This garden’s design is intended to provide an abundance of healthy food for a diverse community, while also providing a place where people can gather to learn and share ideas or to relax in a peaceful and beautiful setting.
